Thursday
July 2, 2009 - Lock Port, Joliet, & Rt. 66
On Thursday we drove over to Lockport and viewed the canal and toured the Illinois & Michigan Canal Museum, then drove on Rt. 53 (formerly Rt. 66) down to Joliet. We then toured the Joliet Historical Association Museum. We poked around Joliet and I found the intersection of Rt. 30 and Old Rt. 66. Kind of a noteworthy place - the intersection of the Lincoln Highway and the Mother Road.
We left Joliet going South on Rt. 53 (Old Rt. 66) and stopped in Wilmington for fuel. The Launching Pad Diner, 810 E Baltimore St, Wilmington, IL happened to be across the street. I looked at my watch and it was 12:20 local time so we decided to have
lunch. I ordered a "delux cheseburger" which was on the menu. The young gal taking our order asked me if I wanted everything on it. I replied, "Isn't that what makes it delux?" She looked around for a menu to see if she could answer my question and not finding one she said, "This is my first day." I said, "Oh, this is my first day too." My wife said, "He's just giving you a hard time." I was actually just trying to put a little fun into her day. I didn't realize she was under such pressure that she couldn't catch the subtle humor.
