Getman Brothers and Oury Engineering
When I was a senior in high school (actually the summer before) I went to work for Oury Engineering, who owned Getman Brothers Manufacturing.
Durring the summer I ran blueprints. I made blue prints (technically diazo prints) and then folded them and ran them down to the shop. This was based on specific work orders. We'd get an order for x, y or z, and I'd run the appropriate prints, and the required number of copies and then take them to the scheduling office in the shop.
When school started, I "went on the boards." That is, I became a detail draftwman. I couldn't believe my luck.. I got to do mechanical drawing, which I enjoyed, and I got out of school half a day, and I got paid! What a deal.
About half way through the year, I was standing behind John Byrd watching and admiring him make and exploded parts isometric drawing. I commented that I wished I got paid to do that! He turned around and said, "Really?" I say yes. He said, "I'll see what I can do." About two weeks later, I was a technical illustrator. Below are some of the drawings I did.
