F150 Wheel Problem - Continued.

July 16, 2012

I got the old wheels back from being painted, took them and had the tires put back on them and put them on the truck.

So now I have the new wheels (2011 "take offs" purchased last fall) off the truck. I cleaned them up but was surprised to see that they already have some significant corrosion.  I also was surprise that the rear wheels were significantly worse than the front. The front wheels get significantly more brake dust on them so I expected the front wheels to be worse (if either was worse), but in fact the opposite is true. I'm not sure why.

A front wheel - minimal corrosion. The close up below illustrates it better.

Front wheel close up.

Rear wheel. The corrosion isn't so apparent in this photo, but look at the next shot.

Here you can see the significant corrosion. Also you can see where I was able to reach through
the opening in the wheel when washing.. less corrosion there. So I know washing helps, but it is
not so easy to wash the back side of the wheels. If they needed to be rotated every 6000 miles or
so then that would afford the chance to wash them, but both sets of tires are wearing very evenly.
I'm very pleased with the tire wear.

Here is the truck with the old wheels, now painted. Not bad from a distance. I don't expect them to hold up very well though.

Here is one of the old wheels that has been painted. The guy that painted them did a pretty lousy job.
He didn't paint the back side of the wheels at all even though they have a lot of corrosion. The only
paint on the back side is overspray from where he painted the front. I'm not at all happy with the paint
job.
