2005
- Las Vegas & Southern CAWe flew to Las Vegas, stayed a day there, then drove over to Death Valley, CA, and on over to the Owens Valley in CA, through Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Park, the San Joaquin Valley, the Mojave Desert and back to Las Vegas (not all in one day of course).
Thanks to the excellent airline service, we arrived in Las Vegas only 4 hours late at 2 o'clock in the morning. It was 112 at the airport - cozy. We picked up our rental car and headed for the hotel and bed.
In the morning, we realized the car we had was absolutely filthy, so we drove back to the airport/Hertz to get a clean one (and a free upgrade which turned out to be fortunate in Death Valley)
Then we toured Las Vegas all day, some by car, but mostly on foot on the strip. It was very hot and some members of our party complained but we still got to see all that we wanted to.

Scotty's Castle in the North end of Death Valley
|
Death Valley was HOT! 120 degrees at the "valley floor." We drove all the way up to Scotty's Castle and back down to the main highway leading up out of Death Valley over into the Owen's Valley.
Scott's Castle was built around the turn of the century by a rich guy (Scott) who needed relief from some respiratory ailment.

This photo is from the edge of a crater that was caused by the impact of a giant metor (supposedly - if so, where's the metorite?). It is an imprassive place. The heat was incredible, the wind was blowing constantly at about 40mph, so it was like being a blow dryer. |
The next day we drove up through the Owens Valley and entered Yosimite National Park through the West Entrance. Very Beautiful Scenery there.
One the way back from Southern California, as we were leaving Barstow, and interesting and fun thing happened. See those details here.
