"For a while after my father, Emmett Gibson, died, she sold Larkin grocery
products. It was a mail order grocery. Then later on she sold a series of encyclopedia-type
books. Later with the rest of us helping, she helped Cousin Walter with his
vegetable garden picking berries and vegetables. In her later years she had a
greenhouse."-LAB
"Cousin Alice lived on Pennsylvannia Avenue across the street from Uncle
Walter's truck garden. As children we visited her often. The last time I saw
her, she and her son Boyd were operating a greenhouse business. She had a remarkable
knowledge of plant life. Although by this time her eye sight was extremely poor
she could identify the plants by feeling the leaves. She gave us a bushel basketful
of plants, which mother had planted on the terrace back of our home. For the
rest of her life she enjoyed watching these flowers bloom from May through November."-E.

"My father, Emmett Gibson Brown, was a carpenter and, when he and my mother
were first married, they lived in Findlay, Ohio where he was a carpenter in a
natural gas field. Then they came back to Marion where he built the house I
lived in as a child and at that time he began to have trouble because of his
tumor in the lower esophagus. Because of his illness he worked as a gardener
selling garden products. He was about my size. I understand that as a young
man he played the violin or fiddle, but I'm not sure. He had crooked teeth and
he had never been to a dentist, never had any cavities."-LAB Alice Kempton
