According to the 20th Century History of Delaware County, he "read medicine"

from "Atlanta to the sea" in the Carolinas.

Gloria Mosher Merchant remembers being told that "Uncle Doc" was the
doctor who doctored her Aunt Pansy when she was burned as a little girl. When
Pansy was about 3 years old she was playing with her older brothers who were
smoking and somehow she was caught on fire. She was burned badly and give up
for dead by other doctors. Uncle Doc, however doctored her back to health.
According to Gloria, Aunt Pansy lost her breasts to the damages of the fire.
